Project overview & vision

The REZA project is a large-scale wind energy initiative in Egypt led by Voltalia, focused on repowering an existing wind farm currently operating with legacy turbine technology. By modernising existing infrastructure and increasing generation capacity, the project aims to maximise the potential of a proven wind resource while making efficient use of land.

As the largest renewable energy agreement signed between Egypt’s Ministry of Electricity and a private-sector developer, REZA is expected to play a key role in supporting Egypt’s energy transition and long-term sustainability objectives. Once operational, the project is envisioned to generate approximately 4% of Egypt’s annual electricity consumption while contributing to greater energy security, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and creating economic opportunities through employment, skills development, and local business participation.

Value for Investors

BDN Certification enhances the REZA project's market standing by providing independent validation of its governance, sustainability, and operational practices. The certification signals to investors and lenders that the project has been developed in accordance with recognized international standards, increasing trust and reducing perceived investment risk.

As one of the first renewable energy projects pursuing BDN Certification, REZA can help demonstrate the applicability of the framework to large-scale clean energy infrastructure while enhancing bankability through improved risk transparency, more efficient due diligence, and stronger alignment with institutional investment requirements.

Innovations introduced

Impact on the Local Community

The REZA site is an existing operational wind farm with approximately 285 MW of installed capacity using legacy turbine technology. The project presents a major repowering opportunity to unlock the full potential of the site, with potential capacity to around 1 GW. This transformation significantly increases asset value while strengthening long-term benefits for the surrounding region.

The project, currently under development, is actively engaging with local stakeholders to ensure inclusive and well-informed project design. Early consultations with communities and authorities have focused on employment pathways, skills development, and local participation in the value chain. These engagements reflect a commitment to shared value creation and alignment with local development priorities.

As part of its development phase, REZA has initiated structured engagement with the local communities to assess expectations and potential socio-economic benefits. Feedback has highlighted strong interest in construction-phase employment, technical training opportunities, and participation of local suppliers and service providers. These interactions are helping shape a development approach that prioritizes local inclusion and capacity building. Once operational, the project is expected to generate direct and indirect economic benefits through job creation, procurement opportunities, and strengthened local skills in renewable energy. REZA is also expected to contribute to improved energy reliability, supporting broader regional development and long-term economic resilience.

Mohammed Bisheer, E&S Specialist, REZA

I see this development as more than a renewable energy investment. It is an opportunity to demonstrate how large-scale infrastructure can deliver measurable environmental and social value, support local communities, create opportunities for future generations, and leave a lasting positive legacy alongside its contribution to Egypt's clean energy transition.

A lasting legacy for community

The REZA Project is expected to create a positive and enduring legacy for surrounding communities through job creation, skills development, and support for local businesses during both construction and operation phases. By investing in stakeholder engagement and community-focused initiatives, the project aims to enhance local livelihoods while fostering long-term socioeconomic growth. The project also contributes to national clean energy objectives, helping to improve energy security and support sustainable development. Through responsible environmental and social management, REZA seeks to ensure that the benefits of renewable energy extend beyond power generation, creating shared value for communities and future generations.

Local Bedouin Community Leader, Zafarana

We are hopeful that the REZA Project will create more employment opportunities for our youth and contribute to the development of Zafarana. We believe the project can help put our village on the map, attract further investment, and create new opportunities for future generations.
