Project overview & vision

The East Africa Marine Transport (EAMT) project is pioneering a scheduled roll-on/roll-off freight transport service across Lake Victoria. EAMT commissioned a purpose-built vessel, M.V. Mpungu reduces average journey times from 3-4 days on the region’s congested roads to just 18 hours. The vessel relieves pressure on roads and addresses the issue of driver fatigue.

Built in Entebbe, Uganda at a purpose-built shipyard, the 96-metre long EAMT vessel became operational in early 2025. EAMT is being delivered in partnership with regional logistics experts Grindrod Limited (Grindrod) who are vessel operators. The European Union-Africa Infrastructure Fund (EU-AITF) supported the design and development of the project.

Value for investors

BDN certification adds value to the EAMT asset by confirming its alignment with international sustainability standards and industry standards and industry best practices. It strengthens investor confidence through third-party validation of environmental and social safeguards, positioning the project as a resilient and responsible investment. This distinction supports capital raising efforts by meeting key ESG criteria and appealing to impact-oriented investors. Furthermore, it highlights EAMT as a benchmark for local, climate-resilient infrastructure in the maritime sector, benefiting governments, communities, and funding partners alike.

Innovations introduced

Impact on the Local Community

Currently most freight service on all of the East Africa Rift Lakes, including Lake Victoria, sail only when full on ad hoc charters, and the ports are dilapidated, inefficient and are not well equipped to handle the varieties of cargo that could flow across the Lake. It is hoped that once the pilot demonstrates the feasibility of a new scheduled freight service across the lake, the project will be able to raise further private sector investment to expand the service and introduce new routes.

By successfully introducing the concept of fixed-day scheduled freight service to Lake Victoria, the Project will demonstrate that such a service can be feasible, efficient and profitable.

EAMT implemented a local crew training programme. 30% of the trainee mariners were women. The cadets received their certificates from the Dar es Salaam Maritime Institute. Four of the trainees undertook additional training to quality as Officers. Additionally, SECO – the construction company – worked to employ local men and women across the build, training them to participate in the region’s emerging maritime industry.

This vessel represents a collaborative achievement that redefines the logistics landscape for East Africa.

Speaking on behalf of EAMT at the official inauguration ceremony, Rodney Seema, PIDG Regional Asset Management Lead for InfraCo, said: “This vessel represents a collaborative achievement that redefines the logistics landscape for East Africa. With the M.V. Mpungu we’re not just offering, faster, greener transport options – we’re creating opportunities for regional trade to flourish. On behalf of EAMT, I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to the investors, shipbuilders, partners and the local communities who have contributed to this project’s success.”

A lasting legacy for community

The project will enhance trade throughout the region, and by increasing the efficiency of the transport system in East Africa, it will contribute towards an increased volume of regional trade, the lowering overall of transport costs, the reduction of the cost of imports and help increase the yield from exports. In doing so, it will help increase overall employment within the region and improve economic opportunities.

Speaking at the commissioning event on behalf of, His Excellency, President Yoweri Museveni, the Right Honourable Robinah Nabbanja, Prime Minister of the Republic Uganda emphasized the vessel’s potential to drive economic and environmental progress: “This vessel is a milestone for East Africa, advancing our trade and environmental priorities while strengthening regional ties. My thanks to everyone who brought this project to life.
