Águas do Rio, an Aegea concessionaire, is responsible for providing basic sanitation to 10 million people in 27 municipalities in the state of Rio de Janeiro, including 124 neighborhoods in the capital.

Its goals include: Increasing water coverage to 99% by 2033; Increasing sewage coverage to 90% by 2033; Reducing water losses to 25% by 2031. By ensuring access to treated water and sewage, especially for the most vulnerable populations, in addition to promoting health, dignity and quality of life, the Company will contribute to the environmental recovery of ecosystems, such as Guanabara Bay, recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. In addition, the Company's activities drive socioeconomic development by generating jobs, income and social inclusion, creating a cycle of shared prosperity.

A lasting legacy for community

Legacy For Community

Environmental advances are visible, with Guanabara Bay showing cleaner water and the gradual return of biodiversity. This is the result of improvements in the sewage system, which prevented 100 million liters of water contaminated with raw sewage from being discharged into the bay, directing it for treatment. A similar process occurred in Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas, where the restoration of the sewage structure prevented 5 million liters of sewage from polluting the lagoon.

Positive impact

Another positive impact is the increase in bathing quality, proven by reports from the State Environmental Institute. Historically polluted beaches, such as Flamengo, Glória, Ilha do Governador and Ilha de Paquetá, are cleaner, boosting the economy and tourism.

The story behind the project

Dona Rudi

Dona Rudi

a resident of the Pavão-Pavãozinho community in the South Zone of Rio de Janeiro, at the age of 62 had never taken a shower at home. She used a bucket and a mug to bathe. Her life changed when Águas do Rio installed water networks.

“Before, I would collect water with a bucket from a pipe outside, take it inside the house and heat it on the stove to take a shower with a mug. When the water arrived, the guys from Águas do Rio even bought the shower and the faucet and installed them for me. It was really good. It improved a lot.”

Impact on the local community

Legacy For Community

The Pavão-Pavãozinho community is located in the most expensive square meter of Rio de Janeiro, between the iconic neighborhoods of Ipanema and Leblon. However, the lack of water and sewage collection networks prevents its residents from enjoying the benefits of basic sanitation. Without adequate access to drinking water, sewage and hygiene, the incidence of preventable diseases, such as diarrhea, becomes even higher, especially among the most vulnerable population.

The arrival of sanitation transforms lives, ensuring better health, quality of life and dignity. With the work of Águas do Rio in the community, residents now have not only basic infrastructure, but also proof of residence, strengthening their access to citizenship.

Jeniffer Rosa

My children couldn’t play outside our house. The open sewage didn’t allow it. And the smell was really bad. They were happier than I was with this project.” Jennifer Rosa, resident of Beco Argélia, in Parque Arará.

A story of overcoming obstacles

Legacy For Community

Clayton Guilherme worked as a plumber and as a construction foreman's assistant, with no prospects of a better future. Everything changed in 2021, when he was hired by Águas do Rio. A resident of the Parque Arará community, Clayton witnessed the transformation of the place where he lives and is proud to be part of this change – both in the community and in his own life. Today, he combines studying Environmental Management with working as a coordinator of teams dedicated to expanding basic sanitation in Rio de Janeiro communities.

In their own words: Clayton Guilherme

I am very happy with this work, because, in addition to my job, I help improve life in my community, bringing treated water to my family, neighbors and everyone in the region. I saw my mother and sister having to carry water with a bucket to take home, but now I am contributing to changing this reality. I can say that I feel fulfilled.

It was hard to get there and see all the difficulties Dona Rudi had. I felt very sad. But I also felt satisfied for being able to bring comfort to this lady and to everyone there. Our project aims to provide better conditions so that everyone in the community always leaves happy.

Basic sanitation has always been very precarious in our community, especially here in this region, called Linha do Trem. Beco Argélia was known for its open sewage system. Today, thanks to the work carried out by Águas do Rio, residents can walk around without worrying and leave their doors and windows open without being bothered by the bad smell.
